We would like to hear what you think about our parking proposal for the area around Loudoun Square and Bute Street (Butetown central area).
The aim of the proposal is to:
- help protect space for residents,
- prevent inconsiderate parking,
- encourage walking, cycling and of public transport use, and
- generally improve parking conditions for the community.
What we are proposing
We are proposing to introduce a new parking zone in this area.
The parking zone will include the areas around:
- Alice Street,
- Angelina Street,
- Bute Street (between the junctions of Hemingway Road and Callaghan Square),
- Christina Street,
- Greek Church Street,
- Hannah Street,
- Hodges Row,
- Hodges Square,
- Loudoun Square,
- North Church Street,
- South Loudoun Place,
- Maria Street, and
- West Close.
A parking zone is an area where all on-street parking is controlled during certain times. This is where there are parking bays where parking is considered safe, and yellow lines where parking may be dangerous.
To introduce the zone, we will:
- increase the amount of permit holder only bays,
- make sure all parking in the area is controlled in some way,
- introduce pay and display parking on Bute Street,
- introduce new yellow lines where needed, to stop obstructive or dangerous parking.
Permit holder only bays will apply 24 hours a day, every day. Permit holders will be able to park on their street, or the nearest available street within the zone.
The limited waiting and pay and display bays will apply between 8am and 8pm. However, permit holders will be able to park in these bays at any time, without paying for a ticket.
The area around the park on West Close will become a permit parking area. This is an area where there are no parking bays painted on the road, but any vehicle will need a permit to park on the highway. Drivers are informed of this by signs at the entrance and exit. However, vehicles parked on private driveways will not need a permit.
