We have previously consulted on the changes to Castle Street and are in the process of appointing a contractor to carry out the improvement works.
We want to know if you have any concerns about how the works will affect you.
Improvements being made
We will upgrade the temporary pop-up cycleway to a permanent segregated cycleway along Castle Street and improve:
- bus stops along Kingsway and North Road,
- paving,
- drainage,
- street lighting,
- signage, and
- road surfacing.
The upgraded cycleway will stay on the north side of Castle Street. We will need to make changes to key junctions and small changes to the loading bays.
There are no major changes to lane allocation.
We have carried out extensive traffic modelling to make sure Castle Street meets air quality requirements and active travel guidance.

Changes near Cardiff Castle
Any changes right next to the castle will be subject to a Scheduled Monument Consent application. CADW will process the application.
We will only use materials that are appropriate for the historical site.
When the work is taking place
The work is due to start in January 2026 and expected to run until January 2027. This will be confirmed once we have appointed a contractor.
We plan to start the work at the Kingsway junction and work round towards Westgate Street.
Traffic management and access
The contractor will be responsible for:
- Maintaining access to all businesses and residences.
- Planning and implementation of the traffic management needed to do the work.
Two-way traffic on Castle Street will be maintained when possible. There may be temporary traffic lights set up to allow sections of the scheme to be constructed safely.
Access to shops and buildings will be maintained throughout the works. We will work with businesses to make sure deliveries are not affected.
