We have applied to Welsh Ministers for permission to build and run a new tramway in Cardiff, under section 6 of the Transport and Works Act 1992. This is part of the Cardiff Crossrail (Phase 1A) Tramway Order.
If granted, the order would give permission to:
- Build, operate, and maintain a new tramway in Cardiff. The proposed tramway would start at a new stop next to Cardiff Central railway station, travel along Tresillian Way, across Callaghan Square, and continue down Bute Street. From there, it would connect to the existing railway line between Queen Street and Cardiff Bay stations using a ramp near the junction of Bute Street and North Church Street.
- Construct a short stretch of tramway and make changes to station works within the Cardiff Bay rail corridor. This work would take place between the junction of Bute Street, South Loudoun Place, and Cardiff Bay Station.
- Allow another organisation to take over the permissions granted for the tramway, and also take on the ability to make changes to the operating powers that Transport for Wales currently has for the Cardiff Bay rail corridor.
Welsh Ministers have decided that an Environmental Impact Assessment is not needed for this application. However, a full environmental appraisal is being undertaken to determine the impacts of the scheme. The application includes a request for automatic planning permission to be granted.
We have also applied for Listed Building Consent in connection with the Grade II listed railway overbridge, which carries the Cardiff Bay line railway across the underpass between Bute Street and Lloyd George Avenue.
