Waste management planning guidance

The Waste Collections and Storage Facilities Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) helps planners, developers and architects to design appropriate storage and collection systems for recycling and waste in both commercial and domestic developments.

Waste Collections and Storage Facilities Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) (PDF, 1 MB)

Buying the right waste containers for your development

You must buy 140 litre and 240 litre wheelie bins from us.

You can buy 660 and 1100 litre bulk bins from any supplier as long as they meet our specification. This is to make sure bins are compatible with our collection vehicles and compliant with health and safety standards.

If waste containers are not safe to collect, we reserve the right to refuse collection until the bin specifications are met.

Getting your site ready for collections

If you have been granted planning permission on the basis that a bin store will be provided or the development will use 1100 or 660 litre bulk bins, we will need to carry out a bin store assessment before bin delivery or waste collections can start.

This is to make sure that collections can take place safely, and that your development has been built in line with the planning conditions.

You will need to allow at least 8 weeks for this process to be complete, from initial contact to bin delivery. You must contact us in advance of residents moving in.

If this applies to your development, please contact Waste Management [email protected] to arrange a site visit with our operations team. You can ask for advice at any stage of the building process.

For further information on submitting a planning application please read the supplementary planning guidance.
