Community permits can help with the operational running of your community premises.
This type of permit allows you to park near the premises, without paying for parking daily.
A community premises is a property that does not need to pay business rates. Examples could be:
- public places of worship,
- community halls, or
- properties providing welfare services for disabled people.
You can apply for a community permit if you:
- run a community premises within a controlled parking zone, and
- are a volunteer or member of staff at the premises.
You cannot apply for a community permit if your premises is outside a controlled parking zone.
Your vehicle must also be:
- correctly insured,
- taxed, and
- in a roadworthy condition.
Parking with a community permit
You can use your community permit to park on any street within that parking zone using shared use permit holder only bays. These are bays that are used for both:
- permit holder and pay and stay parking, or
- permit holder and limited waiting parking.
As permits are digital, you do not need to display anything in your vehicle.
Please make sure you carefully read signage and the MiPermit terms and conditions. If you do not use your permit correctly, you may get a parking fine.
Where you cannot park with a community permit
Unlike other controlled parking zones, zones C1, C2, C3 and C4 have resident permit holder only bays in them. You cannot use a community permit to park in this type of bay, in these zones.
Community permits do not allow parking:
- in bays reserved for specific users, such as marked bays for blue badge holders or doctors (as well as resident permit holder only parking in zones C1, C2, C3 and C4),
- on yellow lines or zig-zags,
- where parking has been suspended, or
- where you may cause an obstruction.
Types of permits
There are 2 types of community permits:
Vehicle-specific permits
Vehicle-specific permits are not transferable. This means you can only use the permit for your own vehicle.
Non-vehicle-specific permits
Non-vehicle-specific permits are transferable. This means your organisation can use them for different vehicles.
To do this, you will need to update the vehicle details on MiPermit each time you use the permit for a different vehicle.
