Cockroaches are resilient nocturnal insects that thrive in warm, moist environments and are often found in kitchens and bathrooms. They can carry harmful bacteria, contaminate food, and trigger allergies or asthma.
The most common species of cockroach in the UK are the German cockroach and the Oriental cockroach.
Identifying cockroaches
Cockroaches have flat, oval-shaped bodies with long antennae and six spiny legs. The German cockroach is light brown or tan with two dark stripes running lengthwise down its body. It is typically 10mm to 15mm in length.
Oriental cockroaches are dark brown to black. They are slower moving and larger at a size of 20mm to 25mm.
Both species are capable of quick, darting movements and are mostly active at night.
Young cockroaches (known as nymphs) are smaller and wingless versions of adults and undergo several moults before reaching maturity.
Cockroach life cycle
Cockroaches have 3 life stages:
- Egg
Female cockroaches produce egg cases, each containing up to 40 eggs depending on species. German cockroaches carry the egg case until just before hatching, while Oriental cockroaches deposit them in sheltered areas. - Nymph
Once hatched, nymphs emerge and begin feeding and developing through multiple moults. They are wingless and resemble miniature adults. - Adult
After the final moult, cockroaches become fully grown. German cockroaches reach adulthood in 6 to 8 weeks, while Oriental cockroaches may take several months.
A single female can produce hundreds of offspring in her lifetime. This leads to rapid infestations.
Signs of cockroaches
- Sightings
Spotting a live cockroach in the home should be taken seriously and investigated. - Droppings
Small, dark droppings or smear marks around skirting boards, cupboard tops or behind appliances. - Egg cases
Finding discarded egg cases in hidden areas is a strong sign of an active infestation. - Unpleasant odour
A musty or oily smell can develop in areas with a significant cockroach presence. - Shed skins
As nymphs grow, they shed their skin. Accumulations of these skins may be found near nesting sites.
Preventing infestations
- Keep kitchens clean, wiping down surfaces and storing food in sealed containers.
- Clean appliances from grease and food residue regularly and thoroughly.
- Do not leave pet food or dirty dishes out overnight.
- Regularly empty bins and keep lids tightly sealed.
- Declutter areas around the home to reduce hiding spots for cockroaches.
