What we are doing to upgrade our website to improve accessibility and security for customers.

Ty Canna services

Tŷ Canna is a secondary mental health recovery service where a referral is required. You can discuss a Tŷ Canna referral with your community mental health team (CMHT).

If you are referred, we will meet with you to assess your needs and recovery goals. This helps to make sure we provide you with the right kind of support.

You can be referred to us for:

  • 1 to 1 outreach services, where we can agree clear goals and a strategy for positive outcomes (this is a time-limited service),

  • group activities, which will remain open to you as long as you regularly take part, and

  • relevant information and support.

Once you are using the service, we can also offer:

  • encouragement to get involved in the planning and development at Tŷ Canna, and

  • internal volunteering opportunities which you can discuss with us.

Being referred to the service

Individuals referred to Tŷ Canna need to:

  • be aware of the referral, and

  • be willing to engage regularly with a recovery service.

Your referral will only be accepted if you:

  • are registered with a CMHT (Community Mental Health Team), and

  • have an allocated Care Coordinator.

We will consider all referrals and decide whether a referral is accepted or not. If your referral is not accepted, we will contact your Care Coordinator to explain this decision.

There is currently a long waiting list. We will contact you by post to attend an initial meeting. If you do not come to this meeting, we will give you 2 more opportunities to attend. If you do not come to the third appointment, we will close your referral.

 

1 to 1 outreach service

We offer a weekly 1 to 1 support service, to help you develop your life skills. We can agree clear goals and a strategy for positive outcomes, to meet your needs. As this is a time-limited service, we review it on a regular basis.

If there is insufficient engagement or individuals are not using the service appropriately, they will be closed to the service. The care coordinator will always be informed of this, but the decision will lie with Tŷ Canna.

This service includes support with:

  • signposting to DWP benefit support,

  • developing your education, training or work skills,

  • leaving the house and engaging with the wider community,

  • increasing confidence around others,

  • getting into voluntary work, and applying for jobs,

  • support and signposting when entering further education, and

  • using public transport. Travelling around Cardiff can be challenging, especially when public transport is your only option. We want to promote your independence so we can help with public transport training and planning routes.

 

Group activities

We provide a wide range of opportunities to people who are referred to us

for activities.

We run over 50 online and face to face activities, including:

  • jewellery making classes,

  • pampering,

  • music,

  • cinema groups,

  • spa,

  • coffee mornings,

  • photography groups, and

  • trips and excursions.

We will give you an updated schedule at your assessment.

 

Moving on

Our mental health outreach team works alongside peer support workers and volunteers. This includes individuals with lived experience of mental health challenges.

Volunteers are positive role models and an integral part of our team. They help others overcome isolation by demonstrating that change can happen and goals can be achieved.

Seeing volunteers achieving their goals has a domino effect on the individuals entering our service, showing change is possible.

Some volunteers have left the service to pursue work in Community Mental Health Teams and social care. Other volunteers have gone on to complete further education in social care, social work and nursing. Volunteering at Tŷ Canna has been invaluable, providing volunteers with the skills to pursue their hopes and dreams.

 

Volunteering

We will work with individuals in a person centred way recognising their abilities if suited to a volunteering role. We can support you as a future volunteer and provide:

  • advice,

  • information,

  • social support, and

  • regular in-house and corporate training.

We can help you find volunteering opportunities in the community. We will also help you access accredited courses in:

  • recruitment and selection,

  • first aid,

  • food hygiene,

  • mental health first aid,

  • substance misuse,

  • social care induction framework, and

  • confidence and assertiveness.

 

Partnerships

We work with many other community organisations who provide:

  • support,

  • education,

  • training,

  • careers advice, and

  • employment opportunities.

Family project

We run this project during the school holidays. It is open to all individuals who have been referred to and are registered with Ty Canna, and their children.

The project includes regular and seasonal trips and events for families.

 

Services for marginalised communities

We value equality, diversity and inclusion. We support service users with marginalised identities, with respect and sensitivity.

We currently have support services for specific identities:


Women

We provide specific women-only activities and initiatives.


Men

We provide specific men-only activities and initiatives.


LGBTQ+

We run groups and provide support for LGBTQ+ individuals.


Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic

We provide groups and support for individuals who are Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic.


Transitional

This service is specifically for people aged between 18 and 30. It is for young people transitioning to Adult Services. The project provides younger people with exciting opportunities and activities.
