You can only install a charging point at home if you have off-street parking.
There are a few important points to consider if you are thinking of installing a charging point at home:
- Permission from owner:
You must have written permission from the property owner.
If you are a Cardiff Council tenant, you will need permission from Housing Services via C2C at 029 2087 2087.
- Compliance:
You must check and make sure that your installer meets all electrical testing and building regulations.
- Insurance:
You must have the appropriate insurance to use the charger at your property.
- Planning permission:
You may need planning permission to install a charging point.

Your installer can also provide guidance on this.

Please note:
You cannot install a charging point on the pavement outside your home.
You cannot trail a cable over the pavement to charge your car. Even if a cable is covered or run through a gully, it can be a trip hazard or a barrier to people using the pavement. If someone is injured, you could be liable.
We are monitoring pilot schemes to see if safety and operational issues can be resolved.
