Graffiti is illegal and spoils the local environment. You will be prosecuted under the Criminal Act 1971 if you are caught.
Our responsibilities
The local authority has a responsibility to remove graffiti from:
- Public buildings
- Monuments
- Street furniture (such as benches)
We are not responsible for
- Telephone boxes
- Bus shelters
- Electricity boxes
- Billboards
These are the responsibility of the company that placed them there. You will need to contact the appropriate company:
Billboards (advertising hoardings) - the name of the billboard company is displayed on the billboard and can be contacted directly.
Private buildings are not our responsibility. However, with the landowner's approval we sometimes assist with the removal.
Our response to reported graffiti
We aim to:
- Remove non offensive graffiti within 10 working days.
- Remove racist or offensive graffiti within 24 hours regardless of land ownership.
