Election jobs

In applying for any of these jobs, you agree to the following:

  • I have not and will not participate in the election on behalf of any candidate or political party.
  • I will not use any social media expressing my views in relation to the conduct of the election, or in relation to any candidate or political party associated with it.
  • I am 18 or over.
  • I agree to act with integrity and professionalism.
  • I agree to always treat people fairly and with respect and remain politically neutral.
  • I have good communication skills and can work to the best of my ability.

Presiding Officer

The Presiding Officer must have good knowledge of voting procedures and is responsible for managing the poll at an allocated polling station. As Presiding Officer, you are responsible for:

  • Communicating with the keyholder of the polling station before and during the election.

  • Opening and closing the polling station on time.

  • Collecting and delivering ballot boxes.

  • Organising the layout of the polling station.

  • Maintaining the security and secrecy of ballot papers, ballot boxes and official paperwork.

  • Strictly following voting procedure. For example, checking that people are eligible to vote at the polling station, and only accepting valid ballot papers.

  • Stopping any interference with the voting process.

  • Instructing and supervising Poll Clerks.

  • Making sure all signs and notices are clear, visible and in the correct place.

  • Keeping entrances clear and tidy.

You would need to arrive at your allocated polling station before the poll opens, and leave after it closes. You must also deliver the ballot box to the allocated drop-off point.

Poll Clerk

Poll Clerks support the Presiding Officer in running the polling station. As Poll Clerk, you need to know all voting procedures and how to deal with any related issues.

You are responsible for:

  • Helping to organise and set up the layout of the polling station.

  • Monitoring queues and greeting voters when necessary.

  • Working together and following instructions from the Presiding Officer.

  • Maintaining the security and secrecy of ballot papers, ballot boxes and official paperwork.

  • Strictly following voting procedure. For example, checking that people are eligible to vote at the polling station, and only accepting valid ballot papers.

  • Stopping any interference with the voting process.

  • Making sure all signs and notices are clear, visible and in the correct place.

  • Keeping entrances clear and tidy.

You would need to arrive at your allocated polling station before the poll opens, and leave after it closes.

Counting Assistant

Counting Assistants must count and sort the ballot papers at an allocated venue after the poll closes.

As Counting Assistant, you are responsible for:

  • Counting a high volume of ballot papers accurately, over a limited time period.

  • Separating ballot papers into batches (for example, by candidate) with high attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Working impartially, respectfully, patiently and confidentially.

  • Following instructions from senior colleagues.

  • Verifying ballot paper totals and organising ballot papers into cadidate or political party order accurately.

  • Recounting where necessary.

You need to be available for the full duration of the count. This means you are expected to work for any duration between 4 and 12 hours.

Start and end times vary depending on the election type and voter turnout. After you apply, we will update you with more information closer to the time.

 

Please note that you cannot leave the premises while working in any of these roles. Smoking is not allowed.

If you have worked in previous elections for us, you do not need to apply. We will contact you to ask if you are interested in working again in the lead-up to an election.

If you have previously applied but not worked in elections before, you will need to apply again.
