Carers council tax discount

If you are a carer, you could be entitled to a discount on your council tax.

Unpaid carers

You can view the information about discounts available to unpaid carers.


Caring for someone who is not your partner, or a child of yours under 18

You could get a discount on your council tax if:

  • you provide at least 35 hours of care a week,
  • the person you care for gets certain benefits,
  • you live with the person that you are caring for, and
  • you are caring for someone that is not your partner, or a child of yours under the age of 18.

If you would like to apply for a discount, please complete our contact form. You will need to tell us:

  • your name and the name of the person you care for,
  • your council tax account number,
  • your address and the address of the person you care for,
  • the name of anyone else over 18 years old who also lives with you,
  • what benefits the person you care for receives,
  • the number of hours you care for per week, and
  • your relationship to the person you care for.

Caring for your partner or a chid of yours who is under 18

You cannot get a carer discount on your council tax if you care for your partner, or a child of yours that is under the age 18.

Employed carer

If you are employed as a carer, you could get a discount on your council tax if:

  • you are employed by an individual or organisation to care for somebody,
  • you provide care for more than 24 hours per week,
  • you earn no more than £44 per week, and
  • you live with the person you care for, or in accommodation provided by your job.

  • your name and the name of the person you care for,
  • your council tax account number,
  • the individual or organisation you are employed by,
  • the number of hours you care for per week,
  • your weekly earnings,
  • your address and the address of the person you care for and
  • the name of anyone else over 18 years old who also lives with you.

If you are in a care home, hospital or have moved into your carer's home

If you are moving, or you have moved out of your home to be cared for, please let us know as we may be able to change your bill.

You will be exempt from paying council tax if:

  • you live in a nursing home or care home,
  • you are permanently staying in hospital or a hospice, or
  • you have moved into your carer's home.

Your property will only be exempt if it is unoccupied. If someone else still lives at the property or moves in, then they will be responsible for paying the council tax.

  • your council tax number,
  • whether you have left your house to get care
  • the date your property became unoccupied, and
  • your new address
